Bridging beauty with business

Yorkshire College of Beauty

Concorde IT Group has provided The Yorkshire College of Beauty Therapy with IT support services for over 8 years.

Due to significant business growth and the end of support for Microsoft XP earlier this year, the College began to explore the idea of moving their whole IT infrastructure to their main location at Regency House in Yeadon, Leeds.

Concorde was asked to perform a site audit to gain a clear understanding of the IT systems and software required to compliment business operations. The audit highlighted a series of recommendations to improve the user experience. Concorde designed and project managed a full systems upgrade and installed solutions that met the short and long term requirements of the College.

The Yorkshire College of Beauty Therapy, which was founded in 1983, delivers Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing  Apprenticeship programmes to around 150 learners per year. The College employs 20 permanent IT users and boasts three IT suites used by students comprising of 48 computers. Learners are on work placement four days a week and attend the College one day a week. Since time for formal training and coursework is limited, it was vital to keep disruption to a minimum during the project installation.

Louise Contini, Office Manager at Yorkshire College of Beauty commented, “Concorde made the transition from XP to Windows 8 as easy as possible for us by tailoring the new application to make it look like Windows 7. Windows 8 was quite alien to us and so this has really helped staff and students get used to the new system quickly.”

As part of the project, the infrastructure at the College was virtualised using Microsoft’s Hyper V solution and old PC’s were replaced by a Remote Desktop Solution (RDS) of thin client devices. An offsite remote backup solution to the Cloud was introduced and the existing firewall was upgraded to a Sophos Unified Threat Management (UTM) device to improve wireless connectivity and anti-virus provisioning.

The recent project was a great success and the outsourced IT support services delivered by Concorde provide a great alternative to employing internal IT departments.

As part of the support package with Concorde, Yorkshire College of Beauty receive a high quality national IT maintenance and support service, telephone assistance via the Service Desk, remote end user support, on-site field engineers, off-site repairs and proactive monitoring and management.

“The assistance we receive is great and provides us with the reliable support we need. The staff based within the Service Desk are really helpful, polite and friendly. Plus the process is really easy. We can either log an issue by calling Concorde’s central Service Desk number or we can email directly into Concorde’s internal Service Desk management portal. With staff working various hours at the College, we encourage our colleagues to manage their own support calls. Concorde’s communication platform allows us to do this and it seems to be working really well for us”

Matthew Wood, Group Sales Director for Concorde believes that the remote support services offered can add real value to their customers “Our Service Desk is a state-of-the-art service management hub and as a single point of contact for end users, deals with over 4,000 calls each month. We offer tailored Service Desk contracts for small businesses right through to enterprise customers. By looking after your general day-to-day IT housekeeping tasks, we can free up your time for you to focus on other aspects of your business.”
