Concorde commits to further growth through Apprenticeships

As the 8th National Apprenticeship Week gets underway, Concorde IT Group pledges further support and more vacancies for local young people and reflects on the success of their existing Apprenticeship Academy.

Concorde IT Group, a national IT reseller with around 100 staff, fully appreciates the importance of investing in the skills of the IT industry and created the Apprenticeship Academy to complement an already expanding team at their Head Office in Wakefield.

Group Managing Director Neil Roberts began his career in IT as an apprentice at Leeds Technology College (formerly known as Kitson College) in the early 1990’s and feels passionately about the benefits that businesses can enjoy by adopting apprenticeships as a training and sustainable business growth model.

“The IT and technology industry is ever evolving and so the skills that we may have needed to fulfil customer requirements six months ago, may be different to those we need in the here and now and those needed in a further six months time. Hiring apprentices gives us the opportunity to harness the energy of young IT enthusiasts who have the appetite for a long standing career and the ambition to succeed.  We are a modern and innovative company, growing alongside our workforce and so our Apprenticeship Academy is a great way for us to recruit, develop and retain highly skilled staff.”

From 9 to 13 March, hundreds of schools, colleges and training organisations will be holding events to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The week also coincides with Concorde’s first apprentice celebrating 10 years in service with the company.  Carl McDade, now IT Solutions Architect within the Professional Services team, joined the business at the age of 18 as a modern apprentice before moving into an IT Support role. He has been with them ever since, rising through the ranks to become one of the most respected and knowledgeable members of the Concorde team. Loyal and hardworking, Carl has completed numerous professional qualifications and is a great example of the positive contribution an apprentice can have on a rapidly developing business.

“From day one, Concorde has provided an extremely supportive environment for me to develop and grow, both as an IT professional and as an individual. During the last ten years, I have been inspired to forge a career that will last me a lifetime, maturing with the business through formal qualifications and mentoring from senior peers. No day, month or year is ever the same and I am continuously learning. Taking a role as an IT apprentice was a great stepping stone for me into my chosen career.”

The latest intake of Apprenticeship Academy recruits undertake their formal learning with Estio Training, a Huddersfield based training company who provide apprenticeships schemes to talented school and college leavers. Due to complete their first 12 months with Concorde in the coming weeks, the apprentices have spent their time working within a number of departments including Logistics, Service Desk, Workshop and Professional Services.

The Academy has given the young adults a flavour of working within a busy IT services and support business and upon completion of formal training, Concorde plans to offer full time employment opportunities and  invest more time and resources into further training and coaching in their chosen area of the company.

Apprenticeships are a great way to further develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce and the delivery of formal training combined with hands on work experience offers the individuals a chance to develop IT abilities and helps to lay the foundations for a successful career. Almost nine out of ten employers who had hoped for benefits such as increased skills levels, service, morale and productivity as a result of hiring an apprentice reported they have received them.

“Estio Training is a specialist IT apprenticeship provider and our focus is on sourcing the best IT talent for the future. We have built a strong relationship with Concorde, supporting and working closely with them to recruit and train their apprentices to the highest standard. The opportunities that Concorde provide their apprentices are amongst the most exciting in the industry and here at Estio Training we are committed to supporting Concorde as they continue to expand their apprenticeship talent in the years to come.” Drew Johnston, Client Engagement Manager at Estio Training.

Neil goes on to say, “Being able to nurture our local young talent is something really close to our heart at Concorde. Many of us here, including myself, began our careers as apprentices and we’re now in a position to give something back. It’s vital that we move with the times and; we want to harness the fresh, creative outlook of our youngsters and apply it to the ever changing technology environment.”
